Terms and Conditions — RxPlain

Product: RxPlain (HopHacks 2026 — Philanthropy track hackathon demo)

By accessing or using RxPlain, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app.

1. Educational demo only

RxPlain is a student hackathon project for philanthropy, accessibility, and education (equitable access to understanding medication information). It is not a medical device, not a healthcare product, not a pharmacy service, and not a substitute for a licensed clinician, pharmacist, or emergency services.

2. No medical advice

Content shown, spoken, or exported by RxPlain (including interaction severity, plain-language cards, graphs, voice answers, and PDFs) is for discussion and understanding only.

You agree that you will:

• Not rely on RxPlain as clinical decision support
• Not start, stop, skip, or change any medication based on RxPlain alone
• Confirm all medication decisions with a licensed professional
• Seek emergency care for urgent symptoms (e.g. trouble breathing, severe allergic reaction, chest pain)

3. Accuracy and data sources

RxPlain combines public sources (such as RxNorm, openFDA, DDInter) with AI rewriting and speech. Data may be incomplete, outdated, misread, or wrongly explained.

Severity must come from structured sources in the product design; still, errors can occur. “Unknown” or missing does not mean safe.

4. AI-generated content

Plain-language text, speech, optional OCR, and optional images may be produced by AI models (xAI Grok). AI output can be wrong, incomplete, or misleading. Always cross-check with a professional and primary sources.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Use RxPlain to provide clinical care or to make treatment decisions for others as if you were a licensed professional
• Upload real patient records or identifiers (full name, MRN, address, insurance ID, etc.)
• Attempt to scrape, overload, reverse engineer, or abuse third-party APIs through the app
• Use the service for unlawful, harmful, or deceptive purposes
• Misrepresent RxPlain outputs as professional medical advice or official FDA guidance

6. Your inputs

You are responsible for what you type, upload, or speak into the demo. Prefer sample medications for testing. See the Privacy Policy for how inputs may be processed.

7. Intellectual property

RxPlain UI, code, and branding for this hackathon project are owned by the project authors except for third-party data, libraries, and model outputs subject to their licenses. Public datasets (RxNorm, openFDA, DDInter, etc.) remain subject to their providers’ terms.

8. Third-party services

The app depends on third-party APIs, Snowflake, DigitalOcean (App Platform hosting), and related providers. Outages, rate limits, or policy changes at those providers may break features. We are not responsible for third-party availability or their handling of data beyond what we describe in the Privacy Policy.

9. Disclaimers

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, RXPLAIN IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING ACCURACY, MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT.

10. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE AUTHORS AND AFFILIATED HACKATHON ORGANIZERS ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF DATA, HEALTH OUTCOME, OR PROFITS, ARISING FROM USE OF RXPLAIN. IF LIABILITY CANNOT BE EXCLUDED, IT IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF ZERO DOLLARS (THIS IS A FREE DEMO) OR THE MINIMUM REQUIRED BY LAW.

11. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the RxPlain authors from claims arising from your misuse of the demo, your violation of these Terms, or your reliance on outputs as medical advice.

12. Privacy

Use of RxPlain is also governed by the Privacy Policy.

13. Changes

We may update these Terms during or after the hackathon. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated Terms.

14. Termination

We may suspend or stop the demo at any time (including when the hackathon ends or API quotas are exhausted).

15. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws applicable in the authors’ jurisdiction, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, except where mandatory consumer protections apply.
